Art and Design Curriculum

At Elmwood Infants School, we believe that Art and Design plays an important role in developing children's creativity, imagination and self-expression. Our aim is to provide an inspiring, engaging and inclusive art curriculum that enables all children to develop their artistic skills, explore their creativity and express themselves through a range of artistic experiences.

We use the Kapow Primary Art and Design scheme of work to support the delivery of our curriculum.

Our curriculum gives the children the opportunity to learn about a wide range of artists, designers and craftspeople, explore different artistic styles and movements, and experiment with a variety of materials, tools and techniques. We encourage children to take creative risks, develop their own ideas and appreciate that there is no single right way to create art.

The Kapow scheme covers four key areas of learning:

  • Drawing: Developing control, experimenting with different media and exploring line, tone, shape and texture.
  • Painting and mixed media: Exploring colour, painting techniques, composition and combining different materials.
  • Sculpture and 3D: Creating three-dimensional artwork using a range of materials and construction techniques.
  • Knowledge of artists: Learning about significant artists, designers and craftspeople, exploring their work and using their ideas to inspire their own creations.

Lessons build on previous learning, allowing children to revisit and develop key skills throughout their time at school. Children are encouraged to experiment, investigate, practise techniques and make independent creative choices.

We provide opportunities for children to evaluate their own work and the work of others, using appropriate artistic vocabulary to discuss their ideas, explain their choices and identify ways to improve.

By the time children leave our school, we aim for them to:

  • Have developed a wide range of artistic skills and techniques.
  • Be confident and creative in expressing their ideas through art.
  • Understand and use a variety of artistic materials, tools and processes.
  • Have knowledge of a range of artists, designers and artistic styles.
  • Be able to discuss, reflect upon and evaluate their own artwork and that of others.
  • Take pride in their creativity and appreciate art as a valuable form of communication and expression.

Our Art and Design curriculum aims to nurture a lifelong appreciation of creativity, inspire curiosity and ensure that every child has the confidence to see themselves as an artist.
